Tips For A Home Practice
Below are some thoughts and tips I have that you might find helpful for developing a home practice.
Do you want to do yoga on a regular basis at home? Or do you want to establish a daily meditation practice?
Many of us do, but life gets in the way of starting or keeping our practice going. We can easily lose momentum and motivation. We have great intentions but lack implementation. Right?
If you already have established a regular practice that’s steady and strong, awesome. But just in case you're not in that boat, I will offer a few points that keep me steady in my daily practice.
Just Show Up. It sounds simple and it kinda is. When I’m not feeling like getting on my yoga mat or meditating I tell myself, “Okay, Phoenix, just sit on your mat and do one downward dog.” I do one downward dog for a couple breaths and then I feel like doing a lunge, then child’s pose … and after moving into 2 or 3 poses I am feeling grateful I showed up to my mat and don’t want to stop. And, even if you do just one downward dog you still showed up!
Piggy back. Let’s say you want to start meditating for 5 minutes everyday. Then piggy back this new habit to a habit you do everyday. For instance, sit and meditate for 5 minutes right after you brush your teeth. You know you are likely going to brush your teeth every day so this could be a good habit to which to link your new habit.
Compassionate & Consistent. Be compassionate with yourself but also consistent. Remember, we are not perfecting anything we are practicing. This mindset can take some of the pressure off that we may put on ourselves. Compassionately hold yourself accountable. Make your word and commitment to yourself count.
I hope these three points help you cultivate whatever practice or habit you wish to establish in the remainder of the year!
I am looking forward to being with you soon. Take good care of yourself and your families!
To good health, well-being and peace of mind.
With hugs and gratitude,
Phoenix
